The Most Financially Successful Video Games, By Robert Jain

By Jason McDonald

There are many forms of entertainment that have been successful, but few can claim that they've reached the heights of video games. For many people, gaming is the greatest hobby in the world. For others, it's an area where money can be made. As a matter of fact, there exists a bevy of titles that have been fiscally successful, generating ample profits in the process. Here are the games that have been most successful, in this regard, as detailed by Robert Jain.

Super Mario Bros. - When it comes to important video games, Super Mario Bros. is arguably at the top of the list. Even though many people know it for its classic gameplay, iconic music, and memorable main character, they may not know just how well it did. For those that don't know, the original release saw well over 40 million units sold. Not only does this make it a financial success, according to the likes of Bob Jain, but the best-selling Mario title as well.

Wii Sports - If you owned a Nintendo Wii, chances are that you owned this title as well. Designed with the purpose of showcasing the Wii's motion controls, which were intriguing in 2006, Wii Sports became a sensation among avid gamers and casual players alike. While bowling may have been the most popular game included, each one had its unique charm. In terms of sales, Wii Sports moved more than 45 million units, making it the best-selling title on the console.

Minecraft - Without any clear goal in sight, Minecraft is the definition of a "sandbox game." It's also one of the most popular, selling well over 50 million copies across a variety of devices. It's easy to see why, as this title allows players to scavenge materials and build whatever they please with what they've collected. For those that are into games that encourage creativity and place few restrictions on them, Minecraft seems like a no-brainer.

Tetris - For those that are into puzzle games, it goes without saying that Tetris stakes its claim at the top of the mountain. This is due to a number of reasons, too. While its gameplay is addictive, especially for those that can't help but enjoy a good challenge, it sold 170 million copies across consoles, handhelds, and mobile devices alike. Many other puzzle games have surfaced since then, but none have been able to reach this level of success.
