Techniques Utilized By Space Game Designers

By Yasmine Y. Yost

There are many space game design teams that work hard to produce intelligent, challenging, and entertaining games for players and gaming fans around the world. There are thousands of people all around the world who are at least casual games; there are also die hard gamers that are obsessed with video games. Younger games normally like simple games that do not present extreme mental challenges but instead are fun and moderately easy; adult gamers tend to prefer more difficult games that push their minds to the creative limit. In an effort to get to their target audience and make their latest games as popular as possible, modern game makers spend a lot of time designing every aspect of their new releases.

A space game design team often gets started with a basic gaming genre or concept, such as a shooter game, and then expand this with their own creative ideas in order to break from typical genre norms. This includes coming up with the main storyline behind the events of the game and creating characters that will resonate with gamers while playing. Getting characters to fall right in the sweet spot that attracts both adult players who like complex characters and stories with the simple yet fun attitude of characters that kids prefer is not easy but can make for an excellent game when achieved.

Another challenge encountered by a space game design team is creating the game's overall background setting. Science fiction themes are typically utilized and classics of the genre are adapted to fit new games; it is hard for designers to balance the desire to create a familiar setting that will remind gamers of other sci-fi adventures with the desire to make a totally unique game. Before the game is actually programmed, designers and artists work on finishing drawings and 3D images of the characters and settings they want to use in the game.

Extensive quantities of game testing are done once the final product is just about ready to be shipped to gamers. Several hours are spent doing real game testing in which bugs in the programming are identified and removed in order to make the final product as smooth and fun to play as possible.

Space game design takes a lot of effort and is not just a matter of gathering several science fiction ideas and throwing them together. Appreciating the effort that goes into making these games can help you enjoy the experience of playing them that much more.
