Creating An Excellent Space Game

By Pattie S. Schaefer

There is a lot of competition in the world of space game designers and programmers since they are all trying to make the very best games possible and to attract the most players. There is a large market for the new releases produced by these designers since millions of people around the world enjoy a wide range of different video games. For example, younger children typically prefer simple games that have a rather straightforward approach to overcoming challenges while adults tend to like more advanced games that require a lot of thinking and strategy. In order to get to their target audience and make their latest games as popular as possible, modern game makers spend a lot of time designing every aspect of their new releases.

A space game design team frequently starts with a basic gaming genre or concept, such as a shooter game, and then expand this with their own creative ideas in order to break from typical genre norms. Part of their job is to create new plots and stories that will serve as the motivation for the events and characters of the game that they are working on. This can be challenging, since they have to fit the character's design with the type of gamer they are trying to entertain; children will prefer simple, fun characters while adults like to relate to their game's characters and see them as both realistic and complex.

Making a great background setting for a space game is especially difficult for some designs. Since most space themed games will take place in science fiction based settings, design teams have to get creative and make worlds that are familiar in the sci-fi world without being obvious copies of other games or sci-fi franchises. The game's images, such as backgrounds, enemies, and player characters, must all be prepared as concept art before they can be programmed into the actual game.

Considerable quantities of game testing are done once the final product is just about ready to be shipped to gamers. It requires a lot of time to determine out where all of the bugs are in the game's programming and appropriately fix them before the final release date approaches.

Space game design demands a lot of effort and is not just a matter of gathering several science fiction ideas and throwing them together. When you realize what designers do to make your favorite games, you will appreciate them more.
